Double-decker buses won’t only be seen on the streets touring New York City. The MTA has planned to include double-decker express buses and an overhaul of routes in order to improve and modernize the Staten Island commute. The first official route will be the x17J taking passengers from Staten Island to New York City, seating 81 passengers.
“We want to completely review the way we run buses. To make sure that we get people from A to B quickly, so that buses become an attractive way to travel again,” said NYC Transit President Andy Byford.
The great thing about this bus is passengers will know when their bus is coming and will be able to know if there are seats for them. By 2020, MTA plans to have passengers be able to pay their fare before boarding. If a success, transit plans to add more double-decker buses to the express lines.
