The town of Huguenot on Staten Island is well known for one of the largest Catholic parishes, Our Lady Of The Sea, at south shore. About the town?
Huguenot is an interesting town in New York City, United States. It is bordered by Woodrow and Annandale. The name of the town was originally named Bloomingview and later became Huguenot after the arrival of Daniel Perrin in New York in 1665. He was a French refugee who settled on the south shore of Staten Island. Together with other French refugee Protestants who fled persecution in the catholic denominated in France. They were known as “Huguenot”, and automatically where they settled became the namesake. Due to this, streets in this Huguenot carry French family names like Guyon Avenue in Oakwood and Androvette Avenue. It has a great Staten Island Railway which had been extended from Tompkinsville to Tottenville in Staten Island. At present day, a station for the Staten Island Railway was opened in Huguenot.
As the days went by, the town developed and a branch of the New York Public Library was open and by it, was a Huguenot park branch. The park department were offered 3 acres of land between Eyelandt Street to Colon Street in 1994 to establish the Arbutus Woods Park. The park was name in respect to the Arbutus plant which grew in that area. The plant became extinct in 1940 due to large harvesting. It was eaten in vegetable salads. Today, they are other species of Arbutus plant for nature lovers.
Huguenot’s transformation led to an increase in population and the construction of beautiful houses. It has a beautiful land covered with trees and bushes which are good habitations for wildlife. Its wonderful ponds which are able to support catfishes, eels and sunfish.
