For Staten Islanders commuting has always been a hot topic and continues to be. Whether it be hours in traffic or driving farther to catch the nearest train or bus, our local congress man Max Rose is spearheading this issue. Staten Island Politian’s are bringing awareness to Gov. Andrew Cuomo a microtransit pilot program.
Staten Islands Transportation Issues, do we need more options?
They’ve addressed the ongoing work that has been done to improve mass transit, but have stated that Staten islanders cannot wait years for projects to be completed. The North Shore Bus Rapid Transit project and the West Shore transportation alternatives are still in the beginning stages. Many Staten Islanders forgo mass transit with 68% driving to and from work causing more cars on the road and delays.
“Staten Islanders face some of the worst, longest, and most expensive commutes in the country and the status quo just cannot continue,” Rose said in a statement. “I’m willing to try any and every outside-the-box idea and new initiative available to ease our commuting nightmare. Microtransit programs have proven effective in other cities and there’s no reason we shouldn’t try it here.”The microtransit pilot is the solution to the “first mile/last mile” issue- bridging distance between people’s homes and the nearest mass transit stop.
