Originally the Town of Charleston was a small village settled by the Androvette family who were farmers in 1699. To date many locals know Charleston as the site of the Historic Kreischer Mansion, with the arrival of Balthasar Kreischer (1813–1886), a Bavarian immigrant and founder of the Kreischer Brick Manufactory, the area became known as Kreischerville as his business success imparted growth to the surrounding area. His mansion is built on Kreisher Hill which is a historical landmark. ( http://urbanareas.net/info/resources/neighborhoods-staten-island/charleston-staten-island-history/ )
